Puns and Punctuation

reviewing dialogue punctuation rules using Tom Swift-ie puns

Student Writer Instructions:

Tom Swiftie dialogue puns can be fun!  Sometimes they are so silly that they make you groan, but remember, that's what puns are supposed to do!

Your writing task today is to create (at least) three Tom Swiftie dialogue puns.  Pressing one or both buttons below might inspire you with words and phrases to include in your dialogue's tag line.  Which words and phrases below inspire possible puns in your head?  If you like the sound of a verb or an adverb from the game below, but you don't know what it means, you can look it up at our favorite on-line dictionary by clicking here.

Carefully write out your three Tom Swifties on a piece of paper, thinking about your punctuation carefully.  Have a friend check each finished sentence for proper punctuation.

Share your three perfectly punctuated Tom Swifties with a different friend.  Have that friend decide on your cleverest pun, and your pun that has the most "groan potential."  Look over your friend's pun while he/she looks over yours.

Interactive Choices for Writing:

If you're struggling to start, click the buttons below for some ideas that might inspire you to launch your Tom Swifties.
