Student Writer Instructions:
On the second page of Robert McCammon’s book, Boy’s Life, we read two paragraphs, which begin with this stem--"Here is my room."-- and end with the conclusion--"I am rich beyond measure." The author then shows us the room of the central character, Cory. By the details he chooses as well as by the rich language he uses, we readers also begin to “see” and understand who Cory is.
For this assignment, you will first brainstorm "treasures" in your room (or garage, or treehouse, or closet, or?) using an alphabox. Then you will select six of your best treasures to record on a page in your writer's notebook.
The button below might give you some ideas for "treasures" that might end up in your alphabox brainstorming sheet.
When you have a variety of ideas on your alphabox sheet, select your favorite six (or more) and record them on a special page in your writer's notebook.
Finally, you will write a rough draft that begins with the first line: "Here is my room." It will end with the line "I am rich beyond measure." In between these two pieces of the frame, describe your treasures using rich and amazing details. SHOW us they are your treasures.
