crafted setting description

The writing of author Robert McCammon is inspiring student writers to try new techniques with the traits of idea development and organization. Join us in teaching (and adapting) this on-line lesson and sharing your students' work.

New! You can publish up to three of your students' edited and finished stories at this page to be entered in a semi-annual contest for free classroom resources from the Northern Nevada Writing Project.

Use these samples to inspire your student writers! Discussing the strengths of published student samples before, while, and after using this on-line assignment is important. If your students are engaged in trait- or skill-inspired discussions about any of the samples we've posted here, they will produce better writing, especially if you help them take their writing all the way through the writing process.

Thank you, those who share their students' writing with us.

Here Is My Room
by Tyler, 5th grade writer

Here is my room: My Nintendo DSI sitting high in the air on my shelf above my bed. My big T.V. on the shelf above my PS2--the things that keep me busy throughout the day. My big soft bean bag made of corduroy, sitting like a rock on the left side of my room. My video games, resting on the bottom shelf whenever I‘m not using them. My soft bed, lying with the indentation marks still present from when I was sleeping on it this morning. And my most prized possession yet, the necklace I wear every day from the first time I went to Hawaii. I am rich beyond measure!

My Room
by Emily, 5th grade

Here is my room. When you walk into my room on the left side is my bed. The bedspread is polka dotted. Honestly, I don’t like them, because they are just a little too girly for me. My bed is pressed up against my wall. The walls in my room make my eyes piercing red. They are awful pink and purple butterflies. Another thing that is up against my walls are dressers. The dressers that I have... well... I have had them for a while. They have flowers on them..... disgusting! They are disgusting because they are a little too childish for me. In front of that is my closet filled with clothes obviously . I have out grown my room because I have had this furniture for a while.

Now, here are two of my favorite things in my room. The first thing, my Anthony Bear, is very special to me because my cousin Anthony gave him to me when I was first born. It also is special to me because he passed away. Whenever I look at it, it makes me feel so happy. The second thing that I cherish in my room is my two guitars. I have an electric guitar and an acoustic guitar. My mother gave me the acoustic one because it was hers before it was mine, and my dad gave me the electric guitar for Christmas. I love them so much. Whenever I play them, they let me express my feelings. They also make me feel so special. I am so grateful to have those two guitars, and Anthony Bear. I am rich beyond measure.
