Scripting the Great Train Robbery

writing an original dialogue & action scene inspired by one of the earliest silent movies

Student Writer Instructions:

After looking at scenes from The Great Train Robbery (1903) and listening to some silent movie music clips, you and your writing group will choose one scene and up to three music clips that seem to go best with the scene you have chosen.

You will then compose a story that shows what the scene would look like if it had been written as a story on paper. You may recreate one of the scenes from the movie, or you may create an original scene inspired by characters and scenes from the film. Your scene must show all the action of your scene as well as the details, and it must use dialogue.

When your scene is written, you will rehearse reading it out loud so that it can be performed aloud while the silent music clips you have chosen are playing as your story's background music.

If you're not sure what scene to choose and write to, click the buttons below to help you select.

What scene could you write?
