This lesson was created by Northern Nevada teacher Corbett Harrison. Click here to visit Corbett's website for writing teachers.

This writing prompt inspired by

Three-Sentence Overview of this Lesson:

Based on its title, student writers predict what Benatar's song means when it says that "love is a battlefield."  After discussing Benatar's extended metaphor as a class, students will create an original extended metaphor about love in small groups.  Finally, students will independently create an extended metaphor and write about it in a poem that mimic's Benatar's lyrics . 6-Trait Overview for this Lesson:

The focus trait in this writing assignment is idea development; writers' final poems will be inspired by memorable details that students brainstorm before planning their extnded metaphors.  The support trait in this assignment is word choice; word-play devices--metaphors and internal rhymes--are encouraged as students mimic the original song.
