Interactive Writing Prompts for K-6th Grade
inspiring young writers with word games that have interactive choices
Way back in 2002, we sat down with a large group of energetic elementary teachers, and we showed them the interactive writing games that can still be found on our Right-Brained Writing Prompts homepage and our Left-Brained Writing Prompts homepage. We asked, "What would similar writing prompts--desgined to inspire the very youngest of writers--look like?"
Small suggestions led to complicated brainstorms, interesting ideas slowly made their way to chart paper, and when we were done, the excited teachers asked, "So when will all this be on-line?"
A few months later, ten kid-friendly, interactive word games made their debut at WritingFix, and since then, this page remains one of the most popular destinations on our whole site. New games have been added since this page's debut. We are always looking for ideas for new word games, so if you (or your students) think of one, don't hesitate to send it to us at webmaster@writingfix.com.
We invite you to bring a group of students to your computer lab, or to project one of these interactive games onto your Smartboard or your classroom wall. Click a button. Ask them which button they should click next. Watch the students' brains start to spark. After a few minutes, let the clicking stop and require some original writing from your students' pencils and pens. If the fourteen games can't inspire young writers, we don't know what will.
