Story Starters:
Subordinating Clauses

This writing prompt generator was one of the first twenty-one interactive word games presented at the original WritingFix in-service sponsored by the Northern Nevada Writing Project.

Writer Instructions:

Use this story-starting generator to provide an interesting subordinate clause that might begin some writing for your journal or your Writer's Notebook.

Press the button below until you find one subordinate clause you like from the collection...then finish the sentence that follows the clause so that the WHOLE sentence is interesting.  Next, use the sentence you created to begin an amazing story!  Or a poem!  Or a descriptive paragraph!

Make sure you've punctuated your first sentence correctly.  Click here to read about punctuation rules that go along with subordinate clauses.

If you or your students want to create a list of more interesting story-starting sentences as a class activity, send it to us at webmaster@writingfix.com.  We'll add the best ones to the generator below.   Creating original and powerful sentences is a great way to learn about strong introductions.

Can you start an original story with this clause?
